Assignment 1 -- "It seems as if in the process of growing up we lose the ability to wonder about the world"

"It seems as if in the process of growing up we lose the ability to wonder about the world"
This quote itself in my opinion is tryin to emphasise the feeling that we get from the older/adult world. To say this in an easier way, it is saying that adults cannot or do not think as much as childrens do. This does not mean that we will "lose the ability to wonder about the world", if we stop and lose the ability to wonder about the world, this will then help us stop thinking about the world and even worse, stop thinking about ANYTHING.

Furthermore, i think that this quote is right in a way. This is because when we are young, we will have a lot of experiences and we will see alot from the adult world and think what we want to do and what we would like to do when we grow up. Therefore as we are bigger, we will then start to lose the concept of trying to think "why are we on earth" or "what's the point of living?". To "wonder" about the world, i think that its a type of fantasy thing to a kid. This is because they wonder about everything and thinking e.g." WHY CAN'T I BE SUPERMAN?" These are wonders that children always come up with since its heroic and since thats what they think. But in an adult way, we "wonder" what we do in life, what is our AIM of living.

Personally, i dont agree with Knox's statement that "It seems as if in the process of growing up we lose the ability to wonder about the world". This is because he doesn't think about the other points of view. Adults aka "grown ups" don't seem think as much as childs does, but we think more deeply about life and what's our purpose. In some extent, i also a agree with him in a way. This is because we sometimes think "why are we even breathing?" These questions comes up with an answer that i can never come up with, just like our brains suddenly stop having imaginations and stop wondering. But overall, i dont agree with his statement, since it says that grown ups stop wondering about the world. This cannot be true, this is because if this is true, then how can so many grown ups can be scientists, an politian?

Hi Michael
Some interesting ideas. I too have a problem with Knox's views - mainly because I think times are changing. The internet has allowed us to keep thinking and learning even as an adult because it is so accessible and easy to use. At the same time technology is changing the work place and people are finding themselves with more leisure time which allows them the luxury of "thinking" - do you think we are getting more intelligent? Or wiser?
